Njalla registers domains in its own name by default. Sealname keeps you as the registrant of record, with WHOIS privacy included — or, if you want the proxy model, registers the domain in our name for +$90 a year, with a free hand-back. Here is a dated, sourced comparison.

**Quick answer — What is a good Njalla alternative?**

**Sealname**, a private domain name registration service paid in crypto, is a Njalla alternative for people who want the domain in their own name. Njalla's terms, as quoted in 2023, register domains in Njalla's name unless you ask otherwise. With Sealname, you are the registrant of record: WHOIS privacy included, no ID and no KYC — only a verified email, kept private. A .com costs $12.99/year, versus €15 at Njalla (October 2026).

*Prices checked on October 8, 2026.*

Njalla prices: flat €15 / €30 / €45 / €75 a year by extension, per njal.la/pricing. Dollar values are approximate; the .com value is domainoffer.net's listing of 18 August 2026. — = not stated in the sources we checked. Sealname charges the same price for the first year, the renewal and a transfer.

## Who owns a domain registered through Njalla?

By default, Njalla does. Njalla's terms, as quoted on the Privacy Guides forum in 2023, register domains in Njalla's own name unless the customer asks otherwise. This is the **proxy model**: the provider is the registrant of record and lets you use the domain.

Sealname uses the **privacy model** instead. You are the registrant of record, the legal holder of the domain. Where the registry allows it, public WHOIS/RDAP shows our privacy service's contact details instead of yours. Messages sent to that contact are forwarded to your verified email; we never forward spam or bulk mail.

The difference matters when something goes wrong. Under ICANN's registrar contract (RAA 2013, §3.7.7.3), a holder that licenses a domain to someone else accepts liability for harm from wrongful use. It avoids that liability only by disclosing the user's contact details within 7 days, when shown reasonable evidence of actionable harm.

In UDRP disputes, WIPO notes that panels usually name both the privacy or proxy service and the disclosed registrant. More detail: [WHOIS privacy vs proxy registration](https://sealname.com/whois-privacy-vs-proxy-registration/) and [who owns my domain](https://sealname.com/who-owns-my-domain/).

## Why choose Sealname over Njalla?

Five reasons, each one you can check:

- **A written policy.** No takedown on complaint alone: copyright, defamation, political or competitor complaints need a decision from a Panamanian court. Your data only goes out on a Panamanian court order. The strict exceptions are published: phishing, malware, botnets, child sexual abuse material and fraud that takes money from victims lead to suspension. See the [abuse policy](https://sealname.com/abuse/) and the [disclosure policy](https://sealname.com/disclosure-policy/).
- **The domain is yours.** You are the registrant of record. The transfer code is free, from your account, at any time, with no exit fee.
- **A lower .com price.** $12.99/year versus €15 (≈ $17.38), about 25% less. The renewal costs the same as the first year.
- **No ID, no KYC.** There is no sign-up form: a random 16-digit account number is your login. Each domain needs one verified email, as ICANN requires, and it is never published.
- **Counted every quarter.** Every complaint and data request we refuse appears in a quarterly [transparency report](https://sealname.com/transparency/); the first one is due January 2027.

We also sell only extensions that can be registered privately. The [domain privacy index](https://sealname.com/tld-rules/) rates every other extension Yes, No or "not with only an email", with its source. All prices are on the [pricing page](https://sealname.com/pricing/).

## How do Njalla's and Sealname's takedown and disclosure rules compare?

Sealname publishes its rules in four lines, decided on 8 October 2026: **no takedown on complaint alone**; **your data only goes out on a Panamanian court order**; no ID and no KYC, only a verified email kept private; and strict exceptions written openly — phishing, malware, botnets, child sexual abuse material and fraud that takes money from victims lead to suspension. Trademark disputes follow the UDRP, as ICANN requires of every registrar.

In the sources we checked on 8 October 2026, we found no written Njalla policy on when a domain is suspended or when customer data is released, so we leave those cells empty rather than guess. Two public facts show that registry and registrar decisions do reach Njalla customers: about 200 .tv domains were placed on serverHold at the registrar Sarek Oy in February 2024 (TorrentFreak), and Njalla was named on the European Commission's 2025 Counterfeit and Piracy Watch List (TorrentFreak). With the proxy model, Njalla is also the registrant of record, which makes it the party a complainant writes to.

## Can Sealname register the domain in its own name, like Njalla?

Yes, as an option. Njalla's default is the proxy model: the domain is registered in Njalla's name unless you ask otherwise (terms quoted in 2023, secondary), and it is included in its €15 a year. Sealname's default is the opposite — the domain is registered in your name with WHOIS privacy — and the proxy model is a paid option, [Registered in our name](https://sealname.com/registered-in-our-name/), at +$90 a year on top of the extension price.

With that option the registry and WHOIS show DomaineGoat LLC, never you. What we add is written: full control, a free EPP code, and the domain put back in your own name on request, free. What we do not add is immunity: the same policy applies to every domain.

## What changed at Njalla in 2024 and 2025?

Three events were reported in 2024 and 2025. We list them as they were published, without judging them.

- **February 2024:** TorrentFreak reported that about 200 Njalla .tv domains were placed on serverHold at the registrar Sarek Oy. serverHold is a registry status that takes a domain out of the DNS.
- **October to December 2024:** the company behind Njalla changed from 1337 Services LLC in Nevis to njalla.srl in Costa Rica. A blog post of 14 September 2025 reported that this happened without an announcement.
- **May 2025:** the European Commission's 2025 Counterfeit and Piracy Watch List included Njalla, per TorrentFreak (23 May 2025). The watch list is a Commission report, not a court decision.

These are public facts. Each customer can weigh them when choosing a provider.

## Why did Njalla move to Costa Rica?

Njalla has not published a reason in the sources we checked. What is documented is the change itself. Between October and December 2024, the company behind Njalla went from 1337 Services LLC (Nevis) to njalla.srl (Costa Rica).

A blog post of 14 September 2025 reported the change and noted that it was not announced. If jurisdiction matters to you, check which company your current Njalla terms name. At Sealname, the operator is DomaineGoat LLC, an ICANN-accredited registrar incorporated in Panama.

## Is Njalla safe to use in 2026?

That depends on what you need to protect, and we cannot audit another company. Here are the public facts to weigh, as of October 2026:

- Njalla has operated since 2017. It was founded by Peter Sunde, a co-founder of The Pirate Bay.
- It accepts Monero (XMR). Sealname does not.
- By default, Njalla is the holder of record, so your use of the domain rests on your agreement with Njalla.
- The three 2024–2025 events listed above are on public record.

To see what the public sees for any domain, look it up at [lookup.icann.org](https://lookup.icann.org/en). Our guide shows how to [check your RDAP record](https://sealname.com/guides/check-your-rdap-record/).

## When is Njalla the better choice?

Njalla fits better in these cases, and we would rather say so:

- **You want to pay in Monero.** Njalla accepts XMR. Sealname does not accept Monero; see our [Monero page](https://sealname.com/monero/).
- **You want a proxy model.** If you prefer the provider to be the holder of record, Njalla does that by default. By default Sealname registers domains in your name; the proxy model is a separate paid option, [Registered in our name](https://sealname.com/registered-in-our-name/).
- **You want to pay with PayPal.** Njalla's FAQ lists PayPal. Sealname takes crypto only.
- **You register .io or .ai.** Njalla's flat rates (€45 ≈ $50.64 and €75 ≈ $84.39) are a little lower than ours ($54.99 and $88.99) as of October 2026.

For .com, .net and .xyz, Sealname costs less: $12.99, $13.99 and $13.99, versus €15, €15 and €30.

## How do I move a domain from Njalla to Sealname?

Because Njalla is usually the holder of record, the first step happens at Njalla. Either way, the goal is the same: the domain ends up registered in your name.

1. **Ask Njalla for the domain** — Ask Njalla to put the domain in your name, or to give you its transfer code (auth or EPP code). Ask which of the two it offers for your domain.
2. **Check the lock and the dates** — The domain must be unlocked. If it was registered or transferred recently, ICANN's Transfer Policy blocks a new transfer for a short period.
3. **Open a Sealname account** — There is no sign-up form: you get a random 16-digit account number as your login. Add one email for the domain; it is verified and never published.
4. **Top up in crypto** — Top up your balance with BTC, USDT, USDC, ETH, SOL, LTC (minimum $25). A .com transfer costs $12.99.
5. **Start the transfer** — In the client area, enter the domain and its transfer code. Confirm the verification email within 15 days, as ICANN requires.
6. **Check the public record** — When the transfer is complete, look the domain up at lookup.icann.org. Where the registry allows it, our privacy service's details appear instead of yours.

## Njalla alternative: FAQ

### Is Njalla safe in 2026?

Njalla has operated since 2017 and accepts Monero. By default it registers domains in its own name, so it is the legal holder. In late 2024 the company behind it moved from Nevis to Costa Rica without an announcement, per a 2025 blog post. In 2025 it appeared on an EU piracy watch list. Whether that is safe enough depends on your needs. Sealname keeps you as the registrant of record instead.

### Why did Njalla move to Costa Rica?

No reason was published in the sources we checked. Between October and December 2024, the company behind Njalla changed from 1337 Services LLC in Nevis to njalla.srl in Costa Rica. A blog post of 14 September 2025 reported the change and noted that it was not announced. Check which company your current Njalla terms name.

### Do I own a domain registered through Njalla?

Not by default. Njalla's terms, as quoted in 2023, register domains in Njalla's own name unless you ask otherwise. Njalla is then the registrant of record, and you use the domain under its terms. At Sealname, you are the registrant of record from the start, and the transfer code is free, from your account, at any time.

### How do I transfer a domain from Njalla to Sealname?

Ask Njalla to put the domain in your name or to give you its transfer code. Then open a Sealname account, top up in crypto (minimum $25) and start the transfer in the client area. Confirm the verification email within 15 days, as ICANN requires. A .com transfer costs $12.99, the same as a renewal.

### Does Sealname accept Monero like Njalla?

No. Sealname does not accept Monero (XMR). We accept Bitcoin (BTC), Tether (USDT), USD Coin (USDC), Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), Litecoin (LTC). If you need Monero, Njalla, OrangeWebsite, 1984 Hosting and Incognet accept it. The sources are on our [comparison of private registrars](https://sealname.com/compare/private-registrars/). More on our [Monero page](https://sealname.com/monero/).

### Is Sealname cheaper than Njalla?

For .com, .net and .xyz, yes. A .com costs $12.99 at Sealname versus €15 (≈ $17.38) at Njalla, about 25% less. A .xyz costs $13.99 versus €30. For .io and .ai, Njalla's flat rates were a little lower as of October 2026. At Sealname, the renewal always costs the same as the first year.

### What will public WHOIS/RDAP show for my domain at Sealname?

Where the registry allows it, public WHOIS/RDAP shows our privacy service's contact details instead of yours. Messages sent to that contact are forwarded to your verified email; we never forward spam or bulk mail. Extensions whose registry needs a name and address, such as .de or .uk, are sold registered in our name only, so the registry sees our company, never you; those that need residence, such as .eu, are not sold. Either way, your name, address and phone never appear in public WHOIS/RDAP.

### Who can get my data from Sealname?

Only on a Panamanian court order. A foreign lawyer, a private company or a foreign government gets nothing without Panamanian legal process. The other cases are ICANN duties of every registrar: urgent requests under ICANN rules (an imminent threat to life, serious bodily injury, critical infrastructure, or child exploitation), the UDRP for trademark disputes, data escrow and compliance checks. You are notified before any disclosure, unless the Panamanian court order forbids it. Data is never sold. See the [disclosure policy](https://sealname.com/disclosure-policy/).
