Domain privacy index: can you register each extension privately?

One line per extension: can your details stay out of the public WHOIS/RDAP, who may register it, and whether Sealname sells it. Free to reuse with a link (CC BY 4.0).

Quick answer

Can I register any domain extension privately?

No. Of the 225 extensions in this index, 118 can be registered privately with only an email, 12 more can be private registered in our name (the registry wants a name and address: it gets ours), 5 need more than any registrar can give (residence or an ID number) and 36 cannot be private at all. Sealname sells the 130 extensions where you give one email, nothing else: no ID and no KYC, paid in crypto.

How to read the index

  • Yes: anyone can register the extension with one email, and our privacy service replaces your contact details in public WHOIS/RDAP. The registry receives our privacy contact, not you.
  • Yes, in our name only: the registry wants a real name and postal address (.de, .uk, .nl, .ch…) or keeps the holder name public (.fi, .nz, .cc). We register these in our company's name (Registered in our name): the registry gets our details, never yours, and the price includes the option.
  • Not with only an email: the registry needs residence or citizenship (.eu, .fr, .ca) or an ID or tax number (.it, .se), which no registrar can provide for you.
  • No: the registry bans privacy services (.us, .es, .cl), checks your identity with documents (.cn, .ru, .in, .dk) or requires a local presence (.au, .jp, .sg, .no).
  • Not confirmed yet: the rules come from registrar lists only. We do not sell these extensions until the registry rules are confirmed.
  • Sold by Sealname: when the answer is Yes, in your name or in ours — you give one email and nothing else.

Rules change: registries add identity checks under NIS2 in Europe, and ICANN policy on privacy and proxy services is under review. We re-check this index every quarter and date every change.

Why so many extensions say No

Country-code extensions follow the law of their country, not ICANN rules. Some registries publish every holder (.us bans privacy and proxy services under its own policy), some verify identity with official documents (.cn real-name checks, .ru checks through the Gosuslugi portal since 1 September 2026, .in e-KYC within 7 days), and some only accept local holders (.au, .jp, .sg). No registrar can make these extensions private: a registrar that promises it is either wrong or breaking the registry rules. Generic extensions (.com, .net, .org and the new gTLDs) follow ICANN rules, and all of those we checked allow a privacy service.

Frequently asked questions

Which extensions are the safest choice for a private domain?

Generic extensions such as .com, .net, .org, .xyz or .app, and open country codes such as .io, .me or .co. Anyone can register them with one email: our privacy service replaces your details, so the public WHOIS/RDAP and the registry see our contact, not you. At Sealname a .com costs $12.99/year, privacy included.

Can I register a .us domain privately?

No. The usTLD policy bans privacy and proxy services, and holders need a real link with the United States. Every .us holder's details can be public, whichever registrar you use. Sealname does not sell .us for that reason: see the .us page.

Why is a .de or a .uk sold in your name only?

Because their registries need a real name and postal address for every holder, even though they hide them from the public. Sealname collects one email, nothing else, so we register these extensions in our company's name: the registry receives our details, never yours, and the price shown includes the Registered in our name option. See the .de page and Registered in our name.

Why can't I register a .eu at all?

Because EURid accepts only EU/EEA citizens, residents and organisations, and our company is not one of them: the .eu cannot be registered in our name either. With one email only, Sealname cannot sell it. The .eu page gives the rule and the alternatives.

Can I reuse this index?

Yes. The index is published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence: copy it, quote it or build on it, with a link to this page. The same facts appear on every extension page and in the machine-readable pricing.json for the extensions we sell.

How often is the index updated?

Every quarter, and sooner when a registry announces a change. The date at the top of the page is the date of the last full check; extensions marked "Registrar sources only" have not been confirmed on the registry website yet, and we do not sell them until they are.
